After the exit of the UK from the European Union on 31st January 2020, the government introduced several immigration reforms to attract highly skilled talent and rejuvenate the UK economy. The UK points-based system was implemented to ensure that the right skills contribute actively to the economy and local communities.

The points-based system replaced the Tier 1 Visa program and caters to skilled professionals, students, and specialist workers. Each applicant needs to achieve a minimum of 70 points based on factors such as:

  • Job offer by an approved sponsor
  • Skill level
  • English proficiency
  • Current salary
  • Job in a shortage occupation
  • Educational qualifications

Applicants are categorized into three types: Skilled Workers, Highly Skilled Workers, and Low Skilled Workers. The UK Global Talent Visa Program is part of this system and allows individuals to gain permanent residency over time.

Eligibility for UK Global Talent Visa

Applicants must be 18 years or older and earn an endorsement from a recognized body, depending on their field:

  • Tech Nation: Digital and tech fields
  • Royal Society / UKRI: Science and research
  • Royal Academy of Engineering: Engineering specialists
  • British Academy: Humanities and social sciences
  • Arts Council England: Arts specialists

Endorsements are categorized into:

  • Exceptional Talent: For those who have already demonstrated significant achievements
  • Exceptional Promise: For those with potential to become leaders in their field

The endorsement process typically takes around 28 days but may be extended if queries are raised by the endorsing body. After endorsement, applicants can apply for the Global Talent Visa, with the process usually taking 6–8 weeks.

Visa Validity and Leave to Remain (LTR)

The Global Talent Visa is valid for 5 years and can be renewed. After establishing themselves in the UK, visa holders can apply for Leave to Remain (LTR), which is equivalent to a permanent residency, granting long-term rights similar to a Green Card in the USA.
